This week was Historical!!!

In Social Studies, we learned how geography effects life in the southeast. Did you know that lowland soil is rich and good for farming and highland soil is rocky and bad for farming? Also, did you know that on August 24, 1992, Hurricane Andrew hit south Florida? The howling winds sounded almost hungry to some people. However, one week before Hurricane Andrew hit Florida, a small notice appeared on the back page of the Miami Herald newspaper. It said that the first tropical storm of 1992 was slowly moving toward the United States. "Yikes"!

Now to move on to Math. We've been learning improper to mixed fractions. For example, there's 3 pizzas and you cut them into 6 pieces but 2 were devoured. "Yum"! Then the mixed fraction would be 2 4/6. See, isn't this easy! Now I'll show you the improper fraction. The improper fraction is 16/6. These are as quick and easy as tieing shoes! Then there's the equivalent fractions and there so easy you'll think it's hard. Here, I'll show you--1/2 is equal to 50/100 and 4/8. See, it's as fast as a zipper.

Now to Language Arts. We started a 5 square organizer. The essay is about talents. My whole class has talents, especially my teacher, Mrs. Tomlin. Her talent is being the best teacher ever! Also, we made terrific quilts. We had to write a few paragraphs to explain the meaning of the symbols.

And that was our week.

This week was towering!

January 17-21, 2011

This week was fast-o-matic.

This week was only 2 days long due to Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and two snow days, but we still learned alot.

In Social Studies we talked about the Southeast region. On our tour our first stop was the Everglades National Park in Florida. It's covered in swamp and savannah. A swamp is an area of lowland that is covered in water. A savannah is a flat grassland. There's over 300 kinds of birds there. The next stop was the John F. Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Florida. Disney World and Cypress Garden attract 40 million people a year. Florida is in a part of the sunbelt. The sunbelt stretches across the country from California to Florida.

In Math we learned mixed and improper fractions. Mixed fractions are a number with wholes and fractions. Improper fractions are fractions with numerators larger than the denominator.

In Language Arts, we learned about facts and opinions. Opinions are what someone thinks and facts are what you can look up and be true. We learned about synonyms and antonyms, too. Synonyms are two words that mean the same. Antonyms are words that mean the opposite.

This two day week was spectacular!

January 3-7, 2011

This week was test-tastic!

In Math, we had a math test on decimals. We started to learn how to add and subtract fractions. It's easy because we just add the numerators like this: 5/10 + 6/10 = 11/10. It's the same with subtraction: 11/11 - 5/11 = 6/11. As easy as pie!

In Language Arts, we wrote a candy bar description. We typed our candy bar paragraph on our laptops and added our picture that we did last week. This week we started a story about patience. We could write about one time we weren't patient or one time someone we knew wasn't patient or we could write about the theme in our own way.

In Social Studies we learned about population density. This is how many people live in an area. We learned that the area from Boston to Washington D.C. is a megalopolis and is known as Boswash. We also learned about some early inventions that came from the Northeast Region. Thomas Edison invented the first light bulb. It stayed lit for 13 hours. Henry Bessemer invented steel. Elisha Otis invented a way to make elevators safer. It made people want to live in skyscrapers because it was quicker to get to the top and cleaner up there than at street level. Trolleys were invented to keep the roads cleaner.

In Success Time some of us changed to different groups.

This week was fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

January 4-7, 2011

This week was candy-tastic!

This week in Language Arts we designed our own candy bar. YUM! We got to go to Queeky and draw our own spectacular drawing. We also recorded our "My Special Place" story! (See the December page to see this Voicethread).

In Math we're doing decimals. Right now we're doing reviews. We are getting ready for the big test!!!! Study, Study, Study!!! Also we are learning how to turn fractions into decimals and decimals into fractions. They are really easy.

Now into Social Studies. We learned about the Northeast Region. We visited West Quoddy Head, Mount Washington, New York, Plymouth, Hershey, and Washington DC. We worked on a paper called The Boston Tea Party where you had to order the numbers correctly. We also read about Pennsylvania. Did you know that Pennsylvania has a city named Hershey? The first chocolate factories were there. And we learned about Lowell. Did you know they had the first mills there? The girls who worked there were called Mill Girls. They worked on cotton, cloth, and thread.

We had the Student of the Month Assembly this week also. Angela was Student of the Month and Sophia was Writer of the Month.

We hope you like our amazing Weekly Wiki.
